Dogs who are matted should not be bathed. As they dry, mats will shrink and tighten towards a dog's skin, tangling more hair. If not removed, mats will eventually spread and begin pulling on the animals skin. This can become very uncomfortable. As matting worsens, grooming becomes more difficult, and even painful for your pet. If your dog is a non-shedding breed or sheds very little hair, chances are they have a single coat. Shedding breeds have a double coat. It is this second coat or under-coat that acts as insulation to keep the animal warm in winter. Single coats, even long, provide very little warmth to your pet. In fact, it is just the opposite, rain and snow dampen the hair making it take much longer to dry and can lead to chills. A full groom usually includes trimming of your dogs nails. Did you know that nail trims are not always done as part of every groom? This is because nail trimming is not always needed. Dogs who are walked regularly or who spend a lot of time playing outdoors wear them down naturally. If short nails are trimmed there is a large risk of "quicking" the nail bed. This leads to bleeding and a painful experience for your pet. Nails are checked at every groom to see what condition they are in, and trimmed if needed. Long nails can only be trimmed back so far. Once the nail bed is reached, trimming further will only cause the nail to bleed and be a painful experience for your pet. |
